This antique rug comes from Karaova near Milas on Turkey's south-west coast, where weavers favoured the prayer-niche design. A terracotta niche with a stepped arch sits inside an ivory frame scattered with carnations and small trees, all surrounded by a madder-red border of stars and rosettes. The wool is soft with a short, even pile and the colours have the gentle fade of age. A lovely size for an entryway, beside a bed or on a wall.
