Vintage Oushak rug pillow covers in soft pink, cut from a real Turkish rug

Oushak Pillow Cover: What It Is, Sizes, Styling and Care

Quick answer: An Oushak pillow cover is a cushion cover cut from a real Oushak (Uşak) rug, so the face is soft hand-knotted wool pile in muted pinks, reds, ivory or sage. Ours have a cotton back and concealed zipper, and inserts are not included. Choose an insert 1 to 2 inches larger than the cover, and clean it gently rather than machine washing.

What Is an Oushak Pillow Cover?

An Oushak pillow cover is a cushion cover cut from a real Oushak (Uşak) rug. Oushak is the weaving town in western Anatolia that gave its name to a family of soft-toned, coarse-pile wool rugs. When one of those rugs is too worn, too small or too damaged for the floor, the best-preserved sections can be cut and finished as covers. The face you see is the rug itself: real hand-knotted wool pile, not a print of one.

That is the main difference from the "Oushak style" covers sold by mass retailers. Those are usually machine-woven or printed to imitate the look. A true Oushak cover has slightly uneven knots, small shifts in colour from one area to the next and a pile that has been softened by decades of use. No two are identical, because each comes from a different rug.

Our covers are made this way. The face is cut from a vintage or antique rug woven in Turkey, the back is cotton, and a concealed zipper closes the opening. Inserts are not included, so you choose your own filling. You can browse the current selection in our rug pillow covers collection.

What Does an Oushak Rug Look Like?

Knowing the rug helps you judge the cover, because the cover inherits every trait of its source. Oushak rugs are known for a few consistent features:

  • Soft, muted colour. Faded reds, salmon pinks, sage and olive greens, powder blues, camel, ivory and beige are typical. Many Oushaks look as though the colour has been washed back, and that is much of their appeal.
  • Thick wool pile. The wool is generally coarse and the pile is relatively high, so the surface feels plush rather than fine and flat.
  • Open, large-scale design. Big medallions, spacious floral or lattice patterns and a lot of empty field are common. Compared with tightly packed Oriental designs, the pattern breathes.
  • Uneven abrash. Visible bands of slightly different shade, caused by different batches of dyed wool, give the surface a gentle, painterly movement.

Why Choose an Oushak Cover Over Other Rug Covers?

Oushak covers sit in a very particular place in a room. Kilim covers are flat, graphic and often bold. Tulu covers are shaggy and tactile. Oushak covers are the quiet middle ground: textured wool, but with a calm colour range that rarely clashes.

Feature Oushak rug cover Kilim cover Tulu cover
Surface Knotted wool pile, soft Flat woven, no pile Long, shaggy pile
Typical colour Muted, faded, warm Bold, graphic Natural or saturated
Best on Sofas, beds, armchairs Sofas, benches, floors Beds, reading chairs
Mood Calm, traditional-modern Lively, boho Cosy, tactile

What Size Pillow Insert Do You Need?

Each cover is cut from a different rug, so the exact dimensions are listed on each product page. Always check that page before you buy an insert. As a general guide, these are the standard insert sizes that cushion covers are normally made for:

Insert size In centimetres Typical use
12 x 20 in 30 x 50 cm Lumbar cushion, bed or armchair
16 x 16 in 40 x 40 cm Small accent cushion
18 x 18 in 45 x 45 cm Standard sofa cushion
20 x 20 in 50 x 50 cm Generous, full sofa cushion

A useful rule is to choose an insert about 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) larger than the cover's opening. Rug pile is dense and has little give, so a snug, well-filled insert pushes the corners out and gives a crisp shape. An insert that is the same size or smaller leaves the cover looking limp.

For filling, down-feather inserts give the softest, slouchiest look. A polyester or foam-and-fibre insert holds its shape better and costs less. Either works; it comes down to whether you want a plump or a relaxed cushion.

How Do You Style Oushak Pillow Covers?

Because Oushak colours are muted, they are easy to layer. A few approaches work reliably:

  1. Pick one colour from the room. If the sofa is grey, a faded pink or sage Oushak cover adds warmth without competing. If the sofa is cream, a red-and-ivory cover becomes the focal point.
  2. Use odd numbers. Three covers on a sofa, or one large and two small, look more natural than a perfectly even row.
  3. Mix scale. Combine one Oushak cover with a plain linen or cotton cushion in a nearby tone, and perhaps one kilim cover for contrast. Rug-faced covers look best with at least one plain companion.
  4. Echo the rug on the floor. You do not need to match exactly. A cover in the same colour family as your Oushak or Anatolian rug ties the room together.

Which Oushak Covers Do We Have Right Now?

We sell covers singly or as pairs, and every set is cut from a different rug, so what is available changes. Current examples include Arinna, a pair in vintage Oushak pink, Talameia, a pair in beige and brown and Myra, an antique Oushak pair in red and ivory. Because each rug is one of a kind, once a pair is sold we cannot reproduce it.

A pair gives you a matching set for the two ends of a sofa or the two sides of a bed. A single cover is a good choice if you are building a mixed arrangement from different pieces.

How Do You Care for an Oushak Pillow Cover?

Wool pile is naturally resilient, so care is simple, but a few habits will extend the life of the cover:

  • Vacuum gently. Use a soft brush attachment on low suction, moving with the pile. Do not use a beater bar.
  • Rotate and turn. Switch the cushions around so one does not take all the sunlight or sitting wear. Strong direct sun can fade dyes over time.
  • Spot-treat quickly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth. Do not rub, because rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the pile.
  • Avoid machine washing. Rug-faced covers are not designed for a washing machine. If a cover needs a deep clean, have it professionally cleaned by a specialist who works with wool rugs.
  • Expect some shedding at first. Wool pile may release a little loose fibre in the first weeks. This is normal and fades with gentle vacuuming.

Are Oushak Pillow Covers Worth It?

For many buyers the answer is yes, for three practical reasons. First, the material is real wool pile that has already proved it can last, because it came from a rug that was used for years. Second, each cover is one of a kind, so your sofa will not look like anyone else's. Third, a cover is a low-commitment way to bring an Oushak rug's colour and texture into a room when a full-size rug does not fit the budget or the floor plan.

There are honest trade-offs. The cover is made from a used textile, so you should expect small signs of age, such as slight variation in pile height or tiny colour shifts. We consider these part of the character, and they are the reason it feels different from a new cover. It also needs more careful cleaning than a cotton cover. If you want something you can throw in the wash, this is not the right product.

Frequently asked questions

Are Oushak pillow covers made from real rugs?

Ours are. Each cover is cut from a genuine vintage or antique rug woven in Turkey, so the face is hand-made wool pile rather than a printed or machine-woven imitation. The back is cotton and a concealed zipper closes the opening. Because every cover comes from a different rug, colour and pattern vary slightly between pieces and no two are the same.

Do Oushak pillow covers come with inserts?

No. Inserts are not included, so you choose the filling yourself. Check the dimensions on the product page, then buy an insert about 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) larger than the cover's opening for a full, crisp shape. Down-feather gives a soft, relaxed look, while polyester or foam-and-fibre holds its shape longer.

Can you wash an Oushak pillow cover?

We do not recommend machine washing. The face is wool rug pile, which can felt, shrink or release dye in a washing machine. Vacuum gently with a soft brush, blot spills straight away and use a specialist wool-rug cleaner for deep cleaning. Avoid scrubbing, harsh chemicals and long hours in direct sunlight.

What colours do Oushak pillow covers come in?

Oushak colours are typically soft and muted: faded pinks and reds, ivory, beige, camel, sage and blue-green. Our current examples include a vintage pink, a beige and brown, and an antique red and ivory. Because each rug is one of a kind, the available colours change as pieces sell.

Do Oushak covers match an Oushak rug?

They can, but they do not have to. A cover from the same colour family as your rug looks cohesive, while a cover in a contrasting tone makes a deliberate accent. Muted Oushak colours blend easily with other Anatolian rugs, kilims and plain linen cushions, so exact matching is not necessary.
