With such an obviously different concept in design compared with any of the other pieces already shown from the north-east part of Turkey, it might, at first, seem hard to justify placing this kilim in this section. However, the quality of its wool, its weave and its colours are all very typical of the Erzurum region. As one examines it more closely, one becomes aware of the minor borders on either side of the main panels of design, also found in some of the çuvals produced here. An old piece, this kilim is attributed to weavers from the region of Oltu, a small village in the mountains south of Ezurum. A beautiful, rich colorway featuring deep charcoal/black, warm terracotta/orange, soft lavender/aubergine, sage green, and natural cream. These dyes are highly characteristic of the vegetable-dyeing traditions of the Balıkesir region.
