Eulampia — Vintage Anatolian Wool Area Rug

Vintage Oriental Bakhtiari Style Carpet measuring 7 ft 9 in x 5 ft 7 in (241 cm x 174 cm). This is a very substantial, tightly knotted, original condition rug with strong, deep pile woven by Nomadic and Tribal Village Weavers in Far South Eastern Anatolia, Turkey in the mid 20th Century.
This quality rug is handwoven, in the Bakhtiari style, using high quality sheep wool on a cotton foundation. As with most rugs produced in this region at this time, the distinctive deep reds and strong blues characteristic of Oriental design rugs are complimented by softer shades of coral pinks, terracotta reds, browns, greens and cream. This particular rug is a fine example of the distinctive “Garden Panel” / “Garden of Paradise” Design which features geometrically placed, repeated panels containing a range of floral and animal motifs. The tight knotting and strong pile combine to produce rugs which are sturdy, substantial and durable making them very suitable for use in high traffic areas.
Finely woven and intricately patterned, this rug is more influenced by the fine Oriental weavings intended for Commercial Trade to discerning European buyers than the more rudimentary utilitarian Village weavings made primarily for domestic use. The quality and condition of this rug is first class as the top-grade sheep wool colored by natural/vegetable dyes used in its' construction and the skill of the weaver have that ensured the longevity and beauty of the rug is preserved, even though it has most certainly "outlived" the shepherds, shearers, spinners, dyers, craftsmen and artists who all contributed to its' creation.
