Vintage Large Hereke Rug, 6x9, Late Ottoman Period Floral Rug Handmade from Natural Wool

Precio de oferta$1,170.00 USD Precio normal$2,000.00 USD

We are proud to offer this “one-of-a-kind”, large-size Hereke Rug which was originally hand-woven Circa 1920’s by an inmate of the Sivas Prison in Central Anatolia, Turkey. The rug bears the mark of the weaver on the Border onto which the words “Sivas Cezaevi” have been skillfully woven into the intricate design. During the late 19th and early 20th Centuries the art form of rug weaving was introduced into the Turkish Prison system, particularly in Sivas and Elazig, as part of a program which was designed to not only rehabilitate offenders by teaching them a unique skill, but also to ensure the continuance of the cultural art-form of fine rug weaving according to centuries-old traditions.
This rug has been constructed using top quality wool which has been coloured with vegetable dyes. It demonstrates the hallmark Hereke characteristics of intricate floral designs tightly woven using the Turkish (symmetrical) knot.
This Hereke rug has been shaved / pile reduced in line with the contemporary trend for rugs with lower pile than traditional Turkish rugs. This also allows for better placement under furniture and easier maintenance and cleaning.

Measures: 6 ft 6 in x 9 ft 2 in (200 cm x 280 cm).
