Vintage Flat-weave Kilim Rug woven Circa 1950's in the Eastern Anatolian region of Van. This mountainous area of Eastern Turkey, situated on the Lake of the same name, has, for Centuries, been home to Kurdish, Armenian and Turkoman cultural tribal groups and the weavings of this region demonstrate several distinct characteristics. The colors, obtained from locally sourced and natural or vegetable dyed sheep wool, are dark and somber reds, blues and browns with cream and white used as highlights. Generally, the designs consist of diamond-shaped (hooked/crenellated) medallions repeated over the surface of the kilim, separated by narrow bands and borders. As these are village weavings, often they are woven in slit-weave style on narrow home looms in 2 halves which are later joined to make a wider rug.
