19th Century Bidjov Shirvan Prayer Rug, Antique Caucasian Rug 2'1'' x 4'2''

Sale price$680.00 USD

Magnificent Shirvan Prayer Rug. This Caucasian carpet, woven in the early 19th Century,ly 1900s,
is still in good condition and still very appealing with its charming dark blue background tones. Shirvan rugs are considered to be “tribal rugs”, originally designed and hand-woven by the indigenous tribes of the Southern Caucasus in an area that is now the eastern and northeastern area of present-day Azerbaijan. Shirvan carpets display a variety of designs and patterns that include floral and geometric motifs (lozenges, stars, crosses and small animals) as well as hexagonal latticework and octagonal and cruciform medallions. Sirvan Rugs are woven of locally-sourced sheep wool naturally colored in shades of blue, red and brown which predominate the central field and which are accented by use of gold, yellow and ivory as highlights. These weavers employ a Turkish knot (approx. 60 - 160 KPSI) Though consisting mostly of basic primitive geometric forms, Shirvan rugs display an impressive symmetry and balance, and, although they are generally categorized as "tribal rugs”,and although many have disappeared over time, some of the remaining Vintage and Antique Sirvan rugs are quite sophisticated, adding to their value and desirability as collectables.
