Rug Pillow Covers: How Vintage Turkish Rugs Become Cushions

A rug pillow cover is exactly what it sounds like: the front of the cushion is a piece of a real hand-made rug. Not a printed copy of a rug pattern, not a new weaving made to look old, but wool that was knotted or woven by hand in an Anatolian village decades ago. It is one of the easiest ways to bring the colour and texture of a Turkish rug into a room without committing to a whole floor.

Where the rug comes from

Old rugs rarely wear evenly. A runner that sat in a hallway for fifty years may have a thin centre and perfect ends. A village rug may have a damaged edge while its field is still strong. When a rug can no longer be restored as a whole piece, the healthy sections are still beautiful, and cutting them into pillow fronts gives them a second life instead of a skip.

A good piece for cutting has sound foundation threads, even pile and colours that do not run. Those sections are cut, backed and finished as cushions.

How a rug pillow cover is made

  • The front is the rug itself: hand-knotted pile for a rug cover, flatwoven wool for a kilim cover, or long shaggy pile for a Tulu cover.
  • The back is plain cotton fabric. It keeps the cover lighter and softer against the sofa than a second piece of rug would.
  • The closure is a concealed zipper, so you can take the insert out and the cover sits clean on every side.
  • The edges are stitched so the cut rug cannot fray.

Our covers are sold without inserts. That keeps shipping light, and it lets you choose the fill you like, whether that is feather, down alternative or something firmer.

Why no two pairs are the same

Because each cover is cut from a different part of a rug, the pattern on one cover never repeats exactly on another. In a pair, the two covers usually share the same colours and weaving, but one might show the corner of a medallion and the other a section of border. That small difference is part of the charm: it is the clearest sign that the piece is cut from a real rug and not printed.

It also means that once a pair is sold, it is gone. If you see one that suits your room, it is worth not waiting too long.

Three kinds of rug pillow covers

Most of our covers fall into three groups, and each one feels quite different on a sofa:

  • Rug pillow covers are cut from hand-knotted pile rugs such as Oushak or village rugs. They have a soft, velvety surface and usually more detailed patterns. Browse our rug pillow covers.
  • Kilim pillow covers are cut from flatwoven kilims. They are smooth and thin, with bold geometric motifs and brighter colours. Browse our kilim pillow covers.
  • Tulu pillow covers are cut from Tulu rugs, the long-pile shaggy rugs of central Anatolia. They are the softest and most textured of the three. Browse our Tulu pillow covers.

What to check before you buy

  • Size. Measure the inserts you already have. A 16 x 16 inch cover usually looks fullest with a 16 or 18 inch insert.
  • Photos of the back and zipper. A good listing shows both, not only the pretty front.
  • Close-ups of the pile. Some wear is normal on a vintage piece; holes or bald patches are not.
  • Single or pair. Check whether the price is for one cover or a set of two.

Start small, then go bigger

A pair of pillow covers is also a good way to try a style before choosing a rug from the same tradition: an Oushak cover next to an Oushak rug, or a kilim cushion on a sofa above a kilim rug. You can see every cover we have in stock in all cushion covers.
