The art of rug-making originated with the Turks in Central Asia, where these woven textiles were initially used in tents to provide protection from extreme heat or cold. During the Ottoman Empire, rugs served functional roles on military campaigns and at festive celebrations. They were also indispensable furnishings in Ottoman palaces. Throughout history, the Turkish rug has consistently attracted the attention of the Western world. Among the goods exported from Central Asia onwards, the Turkish rug holds a place of preeminence. Western artists frequently featured Turkish rugs in their paintings as a clear symbol of wealth and prestige. The depiction of an individual alongside a Turkish rug in the same composition was a deliberate way to emphasize the person's high social standing. The primary focus of this study is to explore the development and significant examples of the Turkish rug from its earliest beginnings to the present day.
