our three main product categories
Vintage and Antique Carpets and Kilims
Vintage Rugs are, generally, considered to be textiles woven 30 to 80 years
ago while Antique Rugs are considered to be over 100 years old. Whilst most of
these Vintage and Antique rugs were produced for local, domestic use by the
original Village or Nomadic weaver, many were also specifically aimed at the
commercial market and, as such, demonstrate greater sophistication of design
and weaving techniques and use of superior quality yarns and dyes. All of our
rugs and kilims feature distinctive design, weaving and material quality which allow us to identify their historical and geographical
origins.
We use the term "Rugs" to refer to all of our weavings which can be used on the floor or as wall hangings. "Carpets" are knotted pile weavings and "Kilims" are flat-weave weavings.
Contemporary Rugs
The practice of handmade Rug Weaving declined during the late 20th and early 21st Centuries as the labour intensive art form was overtaken by commercial production of machined rugs made from synthetic materials. Recent years seen a refinement of commercial manufacture in Turkey one of the most important of which is the use of Bamboo and Cotton yarns. This technique results in an extremely soft and durable product which has strong anti-bacterial qualities.
The rugs which we include in this Collection have been specifically selected due to the high quality of production techniques and materials used as well as an appealing replication of original designs, colours and styles.
Whilst still adhering to the traditions of the past, these Contemporary rugs are extremely affordable and most compatable with modern-day home decor trends.
Handmade Carpet and Kilim Pillow Covers
For 100s of years the tradition of rug weaving has been practised by skilled artisans. Just as it "takes a village to raise a child" it is also true that it "takes a village to make a rug". Shepherds, Shearers, Spinners, Dyers and Weavers all have a special place in the production of any hand-made, natural fibre rug.
We are proud to be able to honour the skills and labours of all these people by taking Kilims and Carpets which are, due to the ravages of time, no longer fit for original purpose but which can be "upcycled" into still-useful product.
The result is a piece of Hand-made art which has probably outlived the weaver!
We offer Pillow Covers in a variety of shapes and sizes all of which we handmake in our Workshop.
We also welcome Custom and Wholesale Orders.
